Palmerston North Toastmasters celebrated their 40th Anniversary on Wednesday 14 October 2009. A fun-filled evening with present members, past members and executive members was held at The Churchyard Cafe in Palmerston North.
The first meeting of the Palmerston North Club was held on 11 November 1969, with the Charter Dinner on 13 March 1970, at the Steeple Restaurant, Palmerston North. At the charter the club had a membership of 30, compared to the present membership of 21.
Pat Debney was Master of Ceremonies for the 40th Anniversary, sharing memories of life 40 years ago. President, Michael Burne, gave a profile of the club followed by Lieutenant Governor Education and Training, Denis McCord sharing some of the history and national speech winners from Palmerston North Club.
After consuming the main course, an intriguing Table Topics session was chaired by Tania Beddie. Dessert followed, before the After Dinner Speaker, Dave Gaynor, entertained all present.
The cake was cut by the newest member, Sushi Angampally, and the longest serving member, Tanya Beddie. Judging by the amount of chatter and laughter throughout the evening, a fun time was had by all. It is hoped that Palmerston North Toastmasters will continue for at least another 40 years, with much fun and many goals achieved.
