It was an honour to be invited along to help the members of Kickstart Toastmasters celebrate their 10 year birthday at an evening function held at Mills Reef Winery, Tauranga. Kickstart is a breakfast club who has its own culture but is very professional in their speech making and evaluations. This club likes to have ‘fun’ and the 10th Birthday Celebrations were no exception thanks to the awesome preparation co-ordinated by Bev Hodges and her team.
The theme was Hollywood Glamour with a touch of Kiwiana. Fred Dagg and all the “Trevs” along with the Flopp Twins entertained the guests. Everyone was encouraged to participate including dressing up for the theme. There was tasks that each table of guests had to complete such as making a centre-piece for the table from items supplied plus anything that was available (there was a bit of stealing from other tables until “Trev” stepped into tighten up the rules). We were numbered off and each group had to carry out a task and the best person was awarded a prize eg. Using a hula hoop, using poi’s just to name a few of the tasks.
On a more serious note, one of the original sponsors of the club, Kathy Webb gave an account of where the club started and was glad to see that the club was a strong as ever. Four of the founding members were present to cut the 10th Birthday cake. The District Governor toasted the club for their successes and into another 11 years time we will all come together again to celebrate the coming of age of the club – 21 years – key to the door.
Congratulations Kickstart Toastmasters – may you continue to grow in strength and comradeship.
