Speech Contests

District 72 Toastmasters New Zealand holds four speech contests each year:

  • May - Evaluation and International
  • November - Table Topics and Humorous

During the months prior to these events, Clubs, Areas and Divisions hold their own contests to find the most suitable contestant. The winner of the District International Speech contest represents New Zealand at the Toastmasters International Annual Conference usually in the United States competing for the title of "World Champion of Public Speaking".

Speech contests are an important part of the Toastmasters International educational programme. Speech contests provide an opportunity for proficient speakers to gain contest experience, and allows those not participating to learn by observing proficient speakers.

A full set of contest rules and information is sent to the club president at the beginning of their term.  If you are looking for judging forms and rules, contact your President or Area Governor.

To download a copy of the International Speech Contest rules, go to the Toastmasters International and download the latest Speech Contest Rulebook (36 page 2.5MB pdf).

Check the NZ Champions Corner or World Champions Corner for more information about recent winners and how they did it!

For more information, go to Ernest Speakers website article: "Go for the Gold: Sure-Fire ways to win your next humorous speech contest" by Scott Roeben, CTM.  This was an article which appeared in the March 2001 Toastmaster Magazine and gives great tips for preparing and delivering humorous speeches. (http://www.earnestspeakers.com/humorous-speech.html).

Also check out the excellent and lengthy article "The Art of Using Humor in Public Speaking" by Anthony L Audrieth (http://www.squaresail.com/auh.html).  This article is 24 pages printed so make sure you have plenty of paper in your printer before hitting the print button!   Anthony opens by saying: "The art of using humor in public speaking is just that.  It is an art, not to be taken lightly, but to be applied with great care."  The article finishes with a bibliography of the recommended "classic" humour books.
