District 72 Toastmasters New Zealand is divided into seven geographic areas called Divisions. Each of the Divisions named A-G hold a conference in April to hold the Evaluation and International Speech Contests, and some hold a second one in October when the Humorous and Table Topics Champions are decided. Educational workshops and guest speakers also feature at the Division Conferences.
The Division Conference will be held at The Street Church, Hania Street, Mount Victoria.
The division conference gives you the opportunity to hear the best speakers from Wellington, the Hutt, Wairarapa and Kapiti. Our Division has a fine tradition of quality speakers. Last year in the district contests we placed – Table Topics 1st Dominic Philips, Humorous 3rd David Crisp, Evaluation 3rd Neil McInnes and International 1st Sanjiv Jetley.
At the conference we will hear from Sanjiv about his experiences as a contestant at the International Conference in Calgary and from Joy Ackrill who was awarded a Presidential Citation in Calgary.
If you are bringing a car to the conference remember that you can bring at least 3 others in your car. Open the Door of Opportunity for someone else in your club.

A very successful day. The speeches were amazing and I think the judges would have a difficult time marking the sheets and deciding their winners. A very big thank to all who helped on the day, Judges, timers, tally counters, SAA our MC Eustie Kamath. Also a very big thank you to Michael Burne, the test speaker for the Evaluation Contest for coming in after being notified at 7.30 am on the day after the programmed speaker rang me to say illness prevented him showing. The audience were also great. Division B Governor. Winners Table Topics: Astarte Humorous: Arun Chaudhari Evaluation: Graeme Valentine International Speech: Amy Skelton

Contests were held in Hamilton 12th April.
Successful Contestants as follows
Table Topics 1st Cathie Haakma [Hauraki] Evaluation 1st Judith Ebbett [Kickstart] International 1st Phillip Clynes [Kickstart] Humorous 1st Peter Harington [Geyser Gourmet] The Conference was run in Hamilton in an endeavour to generate more enthusiasm in the area, Peter Elliott coordinated the Hamilton end, Venue and Caterer, the essentials [a roof and food] Neither could be faulted. However attendance was disappointing with 21 from D4 & D8 [Tauranga], 9 from D2 & D5 [Rotorua], and 11 from D6 & D7 [Hamilton].
The keynote Speaker was well received, in fact a coincidence, with the Speaker being blind, an International contestant Toni Sharp being blind, the winner of the Humorous Contest Peter Harington also going down that path, the theme ASPIRE to ACHIEVE came through. Everyone went away from the Conference with a good feeling.
I enjoyed myself and as usual was impressed with the help I was given on the day, 50 Judges/Contest Chair/ Tally Counters/Time Keepers/ Sergent @Arms/ I thank you all, It was your day

Wow! Division F & the Fun division and certainly organised and presented a Funtastic conference.
David Nottage, keynote speaker certainly gave us a lot to think and laugh about. He had us in fits of laughter we he told about when he first started in Toastmasters and what it was like presenting his Icebreaker speech through becoming World Champion in Public Speaking.
Also during his presentation he pleaded with us to use the skills Toastmasters teaches us out in the real world. The world is so dearth of communicators and leaders.
Thank you to John Reimers for reinforcing the District goals and judges from Division A for coming along and helping to make the day a great success.
And without the contestants there would be no contest and they ALL did so well.
Evaluation Contest 1st = Tess Bayley 2nd = Kay Hammond 3rd = Lyn Ackerley
International Speech Contest 1st = Kay Hammond 2nd = Robin Grieve 3rd = Linda McDermott
A huge thanks goes to Division F team and for organising and presenting such a great conference.
On behalf of Division F – all the best to the winners as they go on to compete at District.

Thanks to everyone who made this happen there were many who stepped up for the occasion to make this Division Contest successful. Thank you all. An afternoon delight...From nerves amass we saw them fly in formation, The best of the best from the top of the South to Rakaia competing. Cindy O'Neill (Rangiora and Canterbury Connoisseurs) won the Division International Speech, John Leadbetter (Avon Club) won the Division Evaluation Speech Contest. Congratulations we look forward to supporting you in the next level of competitions. |
Our District Governor Geoff Trotter reminded us of his vision of every member achieving an award. The contest was of very high standard and then Dr Derek Roger gave us a speech on "What Resilience Is All About" and a four step call to action.
Great afternoon enjoyed by all. What a team!
