Wellington, 9-11 November 2007

The November 2007 Convention was held at the Brentwood Hotel, Kilbirnie, Wellington from Friday 9th to Sunday 11th November.

Saturday's Events Report

Following the banner parade, pictured below, the opening address was delivered by the Hon Annette King, a former Wellington Toastmaster and enthusiastic supporter of Toastmasters.  Her speech was entertaining and informative as she told a few tales about public speaking in parliament.

The District Governor Geoff Trotter DTM opened the Convention by describing part of his trip to the International Convention in Phoenix in August 2007.  He also described his vision and theme for the year of Every Step Counts.

Then 280 Toastmasters sang the National Anthem - boy can Toastmasters sing!

Keynote Speaker 2004 World Champion of Public Speaking Dr Randy Harvey opened with a song "Who Will Sing for Me?"  He then described his two experiences of being expelled from school, and finished with a quote from his mother: "Don't settle for greatness - be immortal!" His speech was informative, entertaining and inspiring, and don't you just love his American accent!

Delegates to the "Southern Inspiration" semi-annual comvention in Invercargill from 11 to 13 November were treated to:

Great contests.  The Table Topics contest was won by David Clarkson, with the topic being "Should fireworks be part of our NZ culture?".  Cindy O'Neill won the humorous contest with a rendition of her bike riding skills.

1st David Clarkson Division G
2nd Allan Chisholm Division C
3rd Dominic Phillips Division E

1st Cindy O'Neill    Division G    (Don't bug me)
2nd Dave Acraman Division F     (Fine it most certainly isn't)
3rd Lynden Mason Division A     (Bob, Steve, Neville and Cruz)

Scintillating guest speakers.  Southland Spirit of a Nation brand manager opened the convention with a side-splitting address that included using Colin Perfect as his lawnmower, Invercargill mayor Tim Shadbolt was in his usual witty form and real estate agent White entertained the audience with his music and home-spun humour.

Fantastic educationals.  Gussie Johnson demonstrated her expertise with an educational on voice projection, District speech champions Alun Chisholm, David Clarkson and John Reimers spilled the beans on how to win contests, Craig Capstick gave insights into judging effectively, Rob Julian revved delegates up to obtain new members and Ray Wolken convinced his audience to build new clubs.

The convention ran smoothly, the food was great, the band, "Southern Dixie" had the crowd dancing and the company was fun.  All in all, an inspiring convention.

Speech Exercises

Southland speech and drama teacher Gussie Johnson (a speaker at the Convention) has spent the past 30 years seeing her pupils receive awards but on Saturday the 26th November, it was her turn.

Mrs Johnson a teacher at Southland Girls' High School, was awarded the New Zealand Speech Communication Association's Meredith Caisley Public Relations Award for promoting and advancing all aspects of speech communication.

The following text are some speech exercises which you can practise:

Robert Wong of Maungakiekie Toastmasters gives the following personal report:

"I attended the District Convention in Tauranga last weekend and enjoyed it immensely.

The Contest winners were:

Evaluation Contest:
1st Alun Chisholm
2nd David Clarkson
3rd Anna Campbell

International Speech Contest
1st Jasvir Nagra
2nd Arun Chaudhari
3rd Pat McCarthy

Alun Chisholm was a worthy winner with a well rounded evaluation. He stood out with his presence on the stage and his delivery.

Jasvir Nagra carried on from his superb performance at the area and division contests with his entertaining speech about his escapades on the dance floor with his girlfriend Maybel. He used his props to perfection revealing a very smart polyester dance outfit that would have done John Travolta proud under his dapper dinner suit.

The Communication and Leadership Recipient was the Mayor of Invercargill Tim Shadbolt. Tim gave a very humourous speech in response to his Award and said that he thanks his communication skills to his teacher when he was 6 years old. She was a trained opera singer who told Tim to, "Express yourself!" and he has always been able to speak confidently ever since.  He said he met celebrity actor Anthony Hopkins who was in Southland to star in the movie about New Zealand motor cyclist Bert Munro.  Tim also noted that he met Sir Anthony Hopkins' "toe double." Apparently Bert Munro used to trim his toenails with a grindstone. Since the movie producers could not afford to have a million dollar insurance claim on Sir Anthony's big toe, they needed a toe double. The double, a big Maori fellow, was pleased to be asked to fill in."
