Toastmasters were well to the fore at Wellington’s Walk2Work on Wednesday morning 19 March 2009 at Frank Kitts park on the waterfront.

Those Wellingtonians walking to work were exhorted to join Toastmasters by Luke Guyton (Postmasters) and Rob Julian (Capital Toastmasters) (pictured below).
As the walkers arrived for their free cup of coffee and filled roll, they had to pass the Toastmasters table where the team of Anne Hayman (E9 Gov), Margaret Nixon, Denis McCord (Lt Gov Marketing), Arthur Norgrove, Dave McKenzie, Rob Julian and Betty Meyers moved smoothly into action. As they walked past they were
- Offered a jellybean – in retrospect we should have had a dish of grapes.
- While they accepted they were given a Toastmasters Card
- While they accepted the card they were asked what they knew about Toastmasters (most had heard of us); and then
- Were invited to guess the number of coffee beans in a sealed jar and record their name and phone number. The winner to get 6 month subscription to the club most convenient to them.
We got 27 people having a guess. The winner got within 55 beans of the total of 954 and elected to visit Island Bay Toastmasters. (The sub to be paid by Division E). All the others were phoned to commiserate that they had not won, but "hey! – look us up on the website and come along to one of the 44 Division E Toastmaster Clubs anyway. They would be made most welcome".
Now we wait and see the results.
Island Bay uses an interesting variation. They purchased a raft of lollipops at 5c a 'pop' and attach a slip to the stick giving details of the Club and where it meets. Why not combine this with the Coffee Bean guess?
