District 72 Toastmasters New Zealand is run by a District Team consisting of the District Governor and 2 Lieutenant Governors, seven Division Governors and over 40 Area Governors.  These people are the leaders of Toastmasters in New Zealand.

On this page you will find out what's involved in being a District Officer, and answers to the following questions:

1. What is a District Officer?
2. What are the qualifications required?
3. Do I get appointed or elected?
4. What will it cost me?
5. What will I get out of being a District Officer?
6. OK I'm interested, what should I do now?

1. What is a District Officer?
A District Officer is an Area Governor, Division Governor, District Secretary, District Treasurer, District Public Relations Officer, Immediate Past District Governor, Lieutenant Governor Marketing, Lieutenant Governor Education and Training, and District Governor.

There are currently 46 Area Governors, 7 Division Governors and 7 Senior District Officers making a total of 60 District Officers for New Zealand.

There are many Toastmasters taking care of other roles. They are Field Officers. Field Officers do not attend District Executive meetings unless invited, and do not get a vote at the District Council meetings unless they carry their Club Vote.

Field Officer roles are: Parliamentarian, Club Extension Officer, WHQ Supplies Officer, Dues Renewals Officer, District Supplies Officer, Toastmasters Leadership Institute Coordinators (TLI's), 0800 Operators, Newsline Editor, Webmaster/Directory Officer, District Historian and the two District Convention Chairpersons.

2. What are the qualifications required?
Insofar as practical, an Area Governor should have served on a District Council (Club President or VP Education). An Area Governor is eligible for re-election or re-appointment for one succeeding term only.

A Division Governor shall have served at least six (6) consecutive months as a member of a District Council. A Division Governor is eligible for re-election for one succeeding term only.

A  Lieutenant Governor Marketing shall have served at least six (6) consecutive months as a Club President and at least twelve consecutive months as a Lieutenant Governor, a Division Governor or an Area Governor, or a combination thereof.

A Lieutenant Governor Education and Training shall have served at least six (6) consecutive months as a Club President and at least twelve (12) consecutive months as a Lieutenant Governor, a Division Governor or an Area Governor, or a combination thereof.

The District Governor, at the time of taking office, shall have served at least six consecutive months as a Club President and at least 12 consecutive months as a Lieutenant Governor or Division Governor or a combination thereof.

District 72 appoints several District Officers. They are Public Relations Officer, Secretary and Treasurer.

3.  Do I get appointed or elected?
Area Governors are elected by their Area Council. Area Councils are made up of Presidents, Vice Presidents Education and Vice Presidents Membership of Clubs in each Area. This election by the Area Council must be done before the May District Council meeting. Areas that have no Area Governor elected before the May District Council meeting will have an Area Governor appointed by the District Governor in consultation with the Club Presidents in that area.

Division Governors, Lieutenant Governor Marketing, Lieutenant Governor Education and Training along with the District Governor must all be nominated for Office. Their nomination along with their District Officer Release form is forwarded to the Division representative on the Nominations Committee before nominations close.  Any Nominees that miss on the sending in their nomination form before the closing date may only stand from the floor at the District Council meeting in May. Only nominated and accepted candidates may use the District mailing system or Website for displaying their campaign materials.

4.  What will it cost me?
The biggest cost will be your time. There are Executive meetings during the year, which are held on the same weekend as the District Conventions. There is also a training session in June for all incoming Area and Division Governors.  Area Governors are also required to visit each of their Clubs at least twice during the year.   All District Officers are entitled to have their travel costs reimbursed. However, the details are at the discretion of the District Governor each year, and must be in line with the District Policy Resolutions.   Currently there is a schedule for the reimbursement of some expenses for travel to District Executive and the District Council meetings. Area Governor visits to Clubs are also reimbursed for travel, toll calls and photocopying.

5. What will I get out of being a District Officer?
Your term as a District Officer will be enhanced as you learn how other Clubs have different cultures while fulfilling the Toastmasters program. Meeting and getting to help other Toastmasters from around your Area will also help extend your communication and leadership skills. As a District Officer, you will have the opportunity to have a real say in how your District is run.  You'll also gain credit for your Advanced Leader Silver Award, and can use your term as a District Officer to complete the High Performance Leadership Award.

Review the District Officer Roles on the Toastmasters International website for more information.

6. OK, I'm interested, what should I do now?
Contact your Division or Area Governor to discuss how you can help provide District Leadership by becoming an Area or Division Governor for the next Toastmasters year.
