The District 72 Toastmaster Semi-Annual Convention was held at the North Shore in the Bruce Mason Centre during the weekend of 14-15 November 2009.

Part of the role of the Immediate Past Distinguished District Governor, Chrissy Meyer DTM, was to recognise the successes of the 2008-2009 year.  To this end the following awards were presented:

Area Governor of the Year Penny Coffey DTM.

Area Governor of the Year for 2008-2009
Presented to Penny Coffey DTM

Penny has been a member of Toastmasters since October 1997.   She is currently a member of Canterbury Connoisseur Club and Christchurch Speechcraft Club.   Penny has held various club executive positions, led a successful Convention in Christchurch as Convention Convenor and has been involved in another District 72 Convention held in Christchurch as Registrar.  This is a few of the numerous roles that Penny has carried out in Division G since commencing her Toastmaster journey.   Penny carried out her role as Area Governor for Area G4 with dedication and professionalism and led her Area to President’s Distinguished Area.   Penny worked extremely hard during 2008-2009 and thoroughly deserves to be recognised as Area Governor of the Year.

Division Governor of the Year Richard Moffat ACB CL.

Division Governor of the Year for 2008-2009
Presented to Richard Moffat ACB, CL

Richard has been a member of Toastmasters since May 2003 and is currently a member of Kaiapoi Club.   Richard’s toastmaster journey has been in and around Christchurch.  Richard has held club positions of President, Vice President Public Relations and Vice President Education.   The skills gain at club level held Richard in good stead as he progressed into the role of Area Governor and then onto Division Governor.   Richard excelled in professionalism, led an awesome team who met all their goals.   When a task needed to be completed by a certain date, Richard encouraged his team to meet the target.   Adding new clubs and members enabled Division G to grow.   Richard certainly has the passion of toastmasters and is dedicated and certainly deserves to be Division Governor of the Year for 2008-2009.

Toastmaster of the Year 2009 Sarah Bate DTM.

District 72 Toastmaster of the Year 2008-2009
Presented to Sarah Bate DTM

Sarah Bate has been a member of District 72 Toastmasters since October 2003.   The commitment and hard work Sarah has demonstrated throughout the last Toastmasters year has been awesome. Not only has she been a fully committed member of her four clubs (Speechcraft Club, Twin Towers, PWC Proclaimers and AUT Students) Sarah completed the pinnacle of her Toastmasters educational goals, her Distinguished Toastmaster Award (DTM).  Sarah also completed no less than nine (9) educational awards, including three (3) of the new Competent Leader manuals. With only one Competent Leader task per Toastmasters meeting being possible for evaluation, and each Competent Leader Manual  requiring something in the region of 20 tasks, this clearly indicates how busy and committed to her educational development Sarah has been throughout the year, across all her clubs – making every post a learning and development post.

At the Speechcraft Club, club members and course participants always benefited from every contribution Sarah made to the courses, whether that it was from fresh, innovative and personal educationals and/or through motivational and high-standard evaluations.  Sarah carried out other meeting roles, as well as a number of entertaining and informative speech assignments, often delivered as demonstration speeches.

During all this, outside of Toastmasters, Sarah completed the first year of a Masters of Business Administration (MBA), as well as landing a new job in Wellington.  Sarah certainly had high energy levels and enthusiastic commitment to Toastmasters and has been a focal contributor to the Speechcraft Club.   Sarah is very passionate about the benefits of Toastmasters and certainly earns the right to be District 72 Toastmaster of the Year for 2008-2009.

Long Service Certificates (and Toastmasters lapel pin) were awarded to:

  • Peter Altmann ACS (30 years) of Remuera
  • Dave Stonyer ACG, CL (30 years) of Petone
  • Craig Robinson DTM (25 years) of Napier
