Greetings everyone.
First of all please accept my apologies for not being in contact with you during the past two or three weeks and for the lateness of this letter but a family crisis, plus the current state of my health has overridden all other considerations. Hopefully this is now in the final stages of being resolved and then it will be back to normal.
Secondly I would like to offer my thanks to Jim Curtis, Beryl Simpson, Daniel Hovell, Jeannie Wright, Dawson Owen and Jonathan Depree for the work they put into their respective roles during 2007/08. Well done!
I would like to extend a welcome to the team for 2008/09. They are Leigh Buchanan B1 Area Governor. Ruth Proffitt Area B2 Governor, Jim Curtis Area B3 Governor, Craig Robinson Area B4 Governor, Steve Tutbury Area B6 Governor, Val Mills and Jeannie Wright, our TLI trainers. As you can see from the list we do not have an area governor for B5 and I will, with the assistance of one or two others, be overseeing this area in the interim. This is something that I wish to discuss at the divisional council in September.
The third item to be mentioned is club officer training for the division. All the reports are not in yet, but the feedback so far is excellent.
Ruth Proffit wrote: "The training session was successful. We had 32 club officers attend and this means that 6 out of the 8 clubs in Area B1 and B2 had at least 4 club officers attending the training. Two clubs (Bell Block and New Plymouth) did not get this goal so we intend to hold a follow up session end of July or early August so that these clubs can get their DCP point. (Plus any other officers in the clubs who want to attend but could not on that particular night). I used the agenda that was given to us at district training but we altered it a bit. We reduced some of the length of the sessions so that that the training went for 3 hours max, we put in a new session on the Toastmaster websites (both the international and NZ websites) as a former Area Governor noticed that some clubs were not registering awards promptly so thought it prudent to show how easy it is to do. We had break out sessions for the role sessions and I asked former AG's or experienced toastmasters to facilitator these sessions so that they could explain the responsibilities of the roles to a small number instead of everyone. Reason being is that I remember doing the President's role for the first time and I really only wanted to know what I had to do not what others had to do."
Number 4. Palmerston North club is holding a DCP workshop on Monday the 8th September. This is as a direct result of The B3 B5 club officer training. Val Mills wrote: "just further reflections on last night. In going through the feedback again, and relating back to personal comments to me from attendees, I'm quite shocked at the clubs lack of understanding until last night of the Distinguished Club programme.
If nothing else, being able to show clubs how to achieve on the DCP was a highlight of last night for me.
I can't believe the knowledge was so limited. It is so rewarding to think that clubs now know about it and are going to strive towards gaining points for it :-)
May I just add, I LOVE this role as TLI, helping people achieve their goals is so rewarding - last night was better than I imagined Toastmasters could be."
Comment. Ruth and Val have both given us an excellent example of what leadership in Toastmasters is all about. They have set a benchmark that I expect every team member, (myself included) to attain. So let’s get moving, dream dreams, rise to the challenge and put Division B to the forefront of District 72 this year. It is not an insurmountable goal. We can achieve this. So. Let’s do it!
Number 5. A cry for HELP!!!!!!! For 8 years, 8 longgggggg years Steve Flint has been manning the 0800 line for B Division. He wants a break. Could you get in contact with the clubs in your area and see if we can give Steve the break he so richly deserves. Number 6 Now is the time to start organising your speech contests both at club and area level. As a part of the preparation it would be a good idea to try and also organise judging workshops through your local TLI’s.
