Image: Joy Ackrill DTMPast Distinguished District Governor Joy Ackrill, DTM, has been awarded one of Toastmasters' highest honors. The special Presidential Citation is awarded in recognition of Joy’s outstanding achievements toward the goals and ideals of Toastmasters International and was presented to her by International President Chris Ford, DTM, at our 77th Annual Convention in Calgary, Canada as part of our Hall of Fame Pageant in August 2008.

Joy is quite literally an outstanding representative of Toastmasters and has been a power of strength and guidance in all her years as a New Zealand Toastmaster. She continues with the same vigor and energy today as she has always done with both members of her clubs and with the District 72 Officers. She has always been there to show some of the less experienced Toastmasters what it is to be a Toastmaster and how that can change their lives for the better. She is also there for us more experienced Toastmasters as a leader of impeccable respect and wisdom.

She believes in and maintains the Mission of both Toastmasters International and of the District. She is always available for guidance at both club and District levels and puts in many long hours especially as her current District role as Parliamentarian with her help with the preparations for both District Executive and District Council meetings. However she also has a great balance with Toastmasters, her full time job and her personal life and does not "over do" Toastmasters. Her family has shown her huge support and often accompanies her to District Training and Meetings.

An amazing accomplishment was when Joy was elected as LGM in May 2000 and moved to LGET in September 2000 because of the unexpected and sudden disappearance of the elected LGET. Joy went on to grow District 72 to become a Distinguished District for the first time in three years.

Image: Joy Ackrill accepting her Presidential Citation from Chris Ford.Just a few months ago while Joy was on holiday with her family in the north of New Zealand a local radio station heard she was in the area and asked her for an interview. She accepted of course and gave an hour long interview about Toastmasters and the benefits of belonging. There are many, many stories like this about Joy and it amazes me that she is always willing to do the extra distance to publicise and promote Toastmasters.

Joy has supported and guided me and many other District officers through our District Trio years both as District Parliamentarian and, most importantly, as a good solid sounding board and a person that has an intimate understanding of Toastmaster’s proceedings. She is encouraging, understanding and not afraid to challenge us to strive for and achieve even more success for the members of New Zealand Toastmasters.

Joy Ackrill as an outstanding communicator and leader who is dedicated to Toastmasters and our members. She embodies the title Distinguished Toastmaster and her unselfish achievements, time and effort are truly appreciated by her fellow members. I am confident that any member who has known or worked with Joy would support Joy as a worthy recipient of this prestigious award.

Ray Wolken presenting Rob Hendry with his Presidential Citation.R J Hendry DTM has been awarded a Presidential Citation from International President Ted Corcoran.

This was presented to Ray Wolken on behalf of Rob at the Reno Convention, in August 2004.

The photo at left shows Ray Wolken Immediate Past District Governor & Rob Hendry of Dunedin  - presidential citation presentation, October 2004.

When I spoke to Rob and thanked him for all he had done for Toastmasters, his humble response was to say he had gained more out of Toastmasters than he put in.

Rob Hendry has been an active member of Toastmasters New Zealand right from the start in 1962.  This is the longest length of service of any member in New Zealand Toastmasters. Rob continues to be an enthusiastic member.  No matter what is asked of him, Rob continues to say yes with a passion.

On a personal note I recall a Convention, where a few avoided helping assemble registration packs. Yet amongst the packs till the end, there was Rob Hendry, helping out as usual.

Rob is also a fantastic speaker, I can still recall his story of selling a car in a very trusting way.

It worked out eventually and was extremely humourous in the telling.

Rob has been a founding member of Dunedin and Dawnspeakers clubs.

For his work in these clubs he has been acknowledged with life membership in both clubs.

Rob achieved the first ATM in the District, which he received personally from International President Earl Potter.

Rob continues to present educationals and pass on his experience to many Toastmasters.

He is also active as a guest speaker and helps with youth speaking.  Rob is currently Toastmasters Leadership Institute for the Southern part of New Zealand which involves extensive travel.  In all this Rob continues to say Yes, and is an extremely supportive Toastmaster.

I believe Rob is a great ambassador for Toastmasters and prospective members of District 72. Rob has been generous with the giving of his time to Toastmasters, and is always willing to give without expecting reward.

Rob Hendry DTM is certainly a worthy recipient of the Presidential Citation.
