Welcome to the first edition of "The Toast Rack", my blog as your Lieutenant Governor Marketing for 2010/11. My purpose is to share news, thoughts and ideas about Toastmasters.
Through our involvement with Toastmasters each one of us makes a difference, not just in our own lives, but in many lives and probably in the lives of some people, that we will never meet. By responding promptly to a membership enquiry, giving a well considered evaluation, encouraging another member, being a club coach or club officer we make a difference, not just to the members of our own club, but also to the people in their lives and their communities.
Sometimes people ask if Toastmasters is a community organisation and the answer is No and Yes. We are not an organisation that directly impacts our local community like the community service organisations.
The difference, that Toastmasters does make in the communities, is when members and past members use the skills and the confidence that they develop in Toastmasters in the other areas of their lives, including community groups. Sometimes a member will leave Toastmasters, because of the opportunity to make a difference in another area. This is not a disaster to the organisation; it might even be a success from one point of view.
What it is - is the reason why a regular inflow of new members is essential for every club.
There will be a series of membership promotions from the District over the next year to assist clubs. However, what really makes the difference is a clubs ongoing promotional campaign in their area.
Whilst we do have a programme for a club to handle a large influx of members at one time ( 8+), what works best for a club and its members is a steady inflow during the year – say 3 new members every two months.
Each Division Governor will be appointing a Divisional Public Relations Officer, who will be a major resource for the Club’s Vice Ppresident Public Relations. Contact your Division Governor to find out your local resource person. |
