Have you seen this poster on the back of a Christchurch bus?
If you have arrived on this page having seen the poster, welcome!
You are obviously interested in Toastmasters, and learning more.
The best place to start is with our Benefits of Toastmasters page, then look at the Join Toastmasters page for more information about what's involved in joining this wonderful organisation.
After that, check the Club Finder to locate a club near you, and send an email or contact the club by phone to arrange to visit their next meeting. Tell them - Yes! I saw the Back of the Bus Ad!
Christchurch Toastmasters clubs are looking forward to meeting you.
At Club Officer training in 2007, a newer member asked me to pose the question, "What does District, Division or Area do for us in terms of advertising to draw in new members?". The short answer was "Nothing - clubs don't want that". A few of us felt we were left to fend for ourselves in terms of publicity. After the words "that's not good enough" passed my lips in an uncharacteristic display of assertiveness I was invited to fill the the newly created position of Division G Public Relations Officer. With over 200 clubs in New Zealand and 25+ clubs in Christchurch I tried to think big and became really excited by the thought of seeing Toastmasters on the back of a bus. With support from Division G Governor John Sullivan and Division G Treasurer Phil Gourdie, I engaged the services of BeSeen Advertising in Christchurch and liaised with them to make up an advertisement for us. District Governor Geoff Trotter volunteered for modelling duties and Phil roped in Belfast Toastmasters Club President Ngarita Ditfort to balance out Geoff's rugged good looks with demure femininity. The District team leaders came up with the short, sharp message and Phil's Toastmasters training came in handy to persuade them to fund the ad as a trial run in Christchurch to gauge the feasibility of advertising this way. The result can now be seen motoring around Christchurch city on Bus Number 119. If it works well I hope that Christchurch clubs would consider doing it again and joining together to pay for this novel campaign.
