We are three quarters the way through our Toastmasters year - I hope you are all enjoying and progressing on your Toastmasters journey and achieving your goals.
Division Conference The big event that is coming up on 12 April 2008 is the Division E Conference, at the Avalon Baptist Church, High Street, Lower Hutt. This where we see and hear the 9 best speakers and 9 best evaluators in Wellington plus find our representatives for the District (national) finals in Rotorua on 17-18 May 2008. The cost is only $10.00 if you register before the event or $15.00 on the day and all Toastmasters are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Club Leadership Training Our Division Team of Toastmasters provided your Club committee with the opportunity of learning more skills at the recent Club leadership training – these skills will help ensure your Club continues to be successful as well as have the knowledge and strategies to put in place if Club membership numbers decrease or the DCP (Distinguished Club Program) goals are not being achieved.
Contests I hope that you took the opportunity to participate in your Club Prepared/International speech contest or the Evaluation contests held during February and March. This was another speaking opportunity plus a chance to step outside your comfort zone and speak under a bit more pressure. By stretching ourselves we become better speakers. No doubt you will have also learnt by observing the best in your Club and Area. Now come and support your Area representatives at the Division Contest on 12 April (see above for details).
New Toastmaster Clubs Diane and Neville Isherwood and David Coxon and their support team have started a Toastmasters Club in Wainuiomata on Wednesday nights and 19 members have joined. This Club will charter (become an official Toastmasters Club) in April 2008 when it has signed up one more member. They would welcome visits from any other Toastmasters.
New Toastmaster Clubs have been started at NZ Post and Statistics New Zealand by Ray Wolken and a number of supporters. Both these Clubs have over 20 members so will become official Toastmaster Clubs in the near future. Congratulations Ray for having started about 15 Toastmaster Clubs in Wellington!!
Planning meetings have been held to start an evening Toastmasters Club in Otaki and a morning Club in Lower Hutt. If anyone would like to support either of these initiatives please contact me.
New Club Committees All Clubs are required to hold their Annual meetings, for the purpose of electing their new Club committee, at the first Club meeting in May. I hope that you have started to encourage members who would learn some leadership skills by taking on a Committee role. This is another learning experience plus this planning reduces any stress that would be present at the meeting if no planning has occurred. No previous experience is necessary because Toastmasters provides both Training and a comprehensive manual.
Area Governors We are also looking for volunteers for the role of Area Governor for a number of our Areas. This is a very rewarding role where you support 3 to 6 Clubs to achieve their goals. Again no previous experience is necessary because 5 training sessions are provided throughout the year. For further information contact your current Area Governor or contact myself.
Speakeasy Workshops Maree Cullen and Area E7 have organised a series of 3 public workshops for the new or nervous speaker. These will be held during April, May and June at venues within the E7 Area (Southern and Eastern Suburbs). Please support these workshops by letting your family and friends know about them and which are great value at $5.00 per workshop.
DCP Results to 21 March 2008 The DCP results for Division E up to 21 March show that we are progressing very well – thank you very much and keep up the great work for the remaining three months. The highlights are that 4 Clubs have achieved 7 Goals – Chartered Chatterers, Business Breakfast, 5 Crowns and Peninsular Presenters. Four Clubs have joined 9 new members (Capital, Business Breakfast, Mount Victoria and Five Crowns).
Despite these achievements the Division still has a challenge with a number of Clubs with low membership. If any one would like to visit another Club and present a few more speeches please contact me and I will give you the Club details. This would be an excellent “win-win” for both you and the Club.
For the rest of us, lets look after all our members so that they stay and enjoy and obtain all the benefits that Toastmasters provides; plus it is easier to look after our current members than recruiting new members. One way to help this is to ensure that our Club meetings are the best that they can be every meeting!!
Remember our District Governor’s simple formula to attracting new members: 1. Invite Guests 2. Make each meeting the very best meeting 3. And most importantly – ask your guests to join
Focus on the rest of 2008 What were your plans for this Toastmasters year? Is it a Competent Communicator, Advanced Communicator, Leadership awards, winning the Club Prepared speech or Evaluation contests, attend the Division and/or District Conventions, join your Club Committee in May, become a District Officer or start a new Toastmasters Club????
There are so many opportunities and with these opportunities we get skills that we can use in all aspects of our personal and professional lives.
Let’s continue with energy and enthusiasm to achieve our Toastmaster goals – mine is to complete my DTM, what is yours??,
Best wishes, Peter Scholtens ACS, AL Division E Governor Division_e@toastmasters.org.nz
