The end of the Toastmasters year is almost upon us. By now all clubs will have held their AGM’s and elected officers for the upcoming year.
It is important that club officers are updated on both the international website and on our District website.
Club Leadership training dates –
- Tuesday 14 July, 5.45 p.m. – 9.15 p.m. St Johns in the City Conference Rooms, Cnr Willis and Dixon Streets, Wgtn
- Saturday, 18 July, 9.00 am – 12.30pm. Petone Baptist Church, Buick Street, Petone
- Wednesday 22 July, 5.45 p.m. – 9.15 p.m. St Johns in the City Conference Rooms, Cnr Willis and Dixon Streets, Wgtn
- Saturday, 25 July, 9.00 am – 12.30pm St. Barnabas Church, Mana Esplanade, Paremata
Please ensure that all of the incoming committee are aware of these dates.
Clubs should be ensuring that all educational awards achieved have been entered and all members are registered. The results of the Distinguished Club Program at the end of this month are the clubs ‘performance review’, and as such give potential members a view on what they can expect if they choose your club.
Now is the time to show the world that every club in Division E is a vibrant and exciting club, meeting member’s needs.
The District Convention in Christchurch was inspiring with the International President Jana Barnhill. The Convention was made better by such a large showing from Division E – 24 of our clubs were represented there.
At this Convention Denis McCord (Petone & Hutt Valley) moved into the position of Lieutenant Governor Education and Training. Steve Bullock (Turbine Talkers, Newlands & WOW) after tense voting was elected as Lieutenant Governor Marketing. We are certainly well represented again at the District Level.
Joy Ackrill (Turbine Talkers, WOW & The Gourmet) who has been District Parliamentarian for several years received a special citation from the District Governor for her services. The District trophy for professionalism was won by Diane Isherwood (Wainuiomata, Capital Chatterers, Capital Breakfast, Porirua Central & The Gourmet). Diane has been the District Treasurer this year.
This is my last newsletter as I hand over the Division Governor role to David Coxon. I will be keeping busy though as President of The Gourmet, Treasurer at Peninsula Presenters and Convenor for the May 2010 District Convention.
It has been a privilege this year being Division E Governor. Certainly a Division to be proud of. I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many people from our clubs and look forward to catching up with people at CLT training, the Division Conferences and of course the District Convention in May (you will be hearing a lot more about that). Many thanks to the team that have supported both myself & the Division this year. If I had known what a fun year I was going to have I would have done it earlier.
Best wishes for the coming year on your Toastmaster journey. Particularly those getting out there picking up the challenge and taking on new roles.
Judy Love DTM Division E Governor
We are now in April 2009 – the last quarter of the Toastmaster year, but still lots happening.
Division E Conference
This showcase of our Division talent is happening on 18th April at Petone Baptist Church, Buick Street, Petone. The registration form can be found on the events page. I encourage all members to take this opportunity to learn, laugh, be inspired and support the contestants.
Although we can take registrations on the day we prefer advance notice of those coming to ensure that there is enough food and equipment.
International Proxy Forms
This month club presidents will receive their form for the club’s proxy vote at the international convention. This year there will be a vote on a change to the governance of Toastmasters. This will not affect clubs directly; however I understand that District 72 will be grouped into a region with the 3 Australian Districts. This would mean that we would have better representation at an international level and provide leadership opportunities. The structure of the International speech contest would also be changed, meaning our contestants would be competing on a more level playing field.
The best option on your form is to tick for our District Governor to choose. He will then use your club vote to select the best option for us.
If you have any questions please contact me or go to http://www.toastmasters.org/future.
Web Workshop
Unfortunately the workshop planned for earlier this year had to be deferred. This workshop is now planned for May 30th.
Club websites are extremely valuable in promoting our clubs to potential members. This workshop will help you in providing your club with a good website.
The cost of the workshop is $15 per person and numbers are strictly limited. Register your interest with Dale Hartle the District webmaster.
Club AGM
Clubs are required to hold their AGM at the first business meeting in May. Planning should now be underway – don’t leave it to the last minute to approach people to take office positions.
Leadership
Many people forget the opportunities that Toastmasters provides for leadership. At this time of the year we are looking for Area Governors and TLIs. These roles are very fulfilling and help to hone your leadership skills. I personally have found that I have developed a lot with the leadership positions I have had the opportunity to take and this has served me well in my career. If you are interested in being an Area Governor or TLI please contact me.
I look forward to seeing many of you at the Division Conference.
