Hi everyone,

We received a communication last night from Toastmasters International with regard to Coronavirus / COVID-19 and how it will impact Toastmasters events in the near future.

The Board of Directors met on March 14 to discuss options to protect and support our Members, Club leaders, and District leaders. After much deliberation, the Board made the following decisions regarding current and upcoming District events, effective immediately:

Area, Division, or District events can no longer be conducted in person, on or prior to June 1, 2020. As an alternative, we encourage Areas, Divisions, and Districts to host events online to help Clubs and Members through this difficult time.

Please note this only impacts on District, Division and Area events and does not relate to your club meetings.

How does this impact our District:
  • The District Conference and final two Division Conferences (Division E and Division J) will be cancelled.
  • The Divisions will be unable to run workshops in-person prior to June 1, 2020 – we will be looking at running some on-line workshops.
  • The Annual District Council Meeting will be held on-line on Saturday 9th May – please keep this date available if you are a District Officer, or a President or Vice-President Education of your Club
  • We are seeking clarification from Toastmasters International in regards to Speech Contests for the remainder of the 2019-2020 cycle and will advise when we hear back from them.

District Conference:
  • All payments made, including registrations, lunches, dine and dance, etc – will be refunded by the District. If you have already paid your registration you will receive an email in the near future requesting your bank account details for this refund to be actioned.
  • Accommodation – should be able to be cancelled with no penalties. We suggest you contact them asap.
  • Airfares/travel – you will need to check on this - if you have insurance you maybe able to claim on your insurance, or get a credit for future travel. You will need to check with the company you are booked with.

Club Meetings at this stage:

This communication does not affect Club meetings – they will continue as normal, however, the following is recommended:
  • If you or a family member are unwell, please stay away from any Toastmasters meeting until you're completely well.
  • Additionally, if you or anyone in your family has been in contact with someone who has recently returned to NZ from an area that has Covid-19, it is requested you avoid Toastmasters' activities for 2 weeks to ensure no potential spread.
Listed below are basic hygiene measures from the Ministry of Health that we should be following:
  • Regularly washing hands (for at least 20 seconds with warm water and soap and dry thoroughly).
  • Sneezing and coughing into the crook of the elbow.
  • Stay home if you are feeling unwell
  • Avoiding close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms.
  • If you feel unwell you should avoid public gatherings and events.
Members are reminded that if they are concerned they may have been exposed to or be displaying the symptoms of Coronavirus, they should contact Healthline on 0800 611 116 or a Health Professional.
