10 leadership projects to be completed

Cover of the Competent Leadership Manual.

The Toastmasters Competent Leadership Manual consists of 10 leadership projects. Each project focuses on a different leadership skill, providing background information and an assignment that requires you to serve in one or more specified meeting or club roles in which you may learn an aspect of that skill.

An evaluator will give you verbal and written feedback on each leadership role you complete in the manual. The evaluator provides a personal opinion of your leadership role, pointing out strengths and offering suggestions for improvement for your next role.

You can complete the Competent Leadership manual at your own pace, and you can work on it at the same time as you are working on the Competent Communication manual or Advanced Communication manuals.

10 Projects to complete

The ten projects cover the following leadership skills:

  • Listening and Leadership
  • Critical Thinking
  • Giving Feedback
  • Time Management
  • Planning and Implementation
  • Organising and Delegating
  • Developing your Facilitation Skills
  • Motivating People
  • Mentoring
  • Team Building

The Key Learning

The Competent Leadership manual is designed to show there is more than one way to approach the same role - you need to approach each role with an idea of how you want to do that. For example, the Toastmaster (or Chairman) role appears in several projects:

  • Time Management - the Chairman will do anything to ensure the meeting keeps to time, including cutting roles, and works very closely with the Timekeeper
  • Planning - the Chairman's objective is that there should be no agenda changes or vacant roles brought to the meeting. In addition, you may wish to establish and promote a theme for the meeeting
  • Facilitating - the main objective is to ensure the meeting runs smoothly and the club achieves its mission of providing a supportive learning environment
  • Motivating - similar to facilitating, except that the Chairman attempts to share the load with the other leadership roles, and make sure they understand what they are contributing to the meeting
  • Team Building - the meeting functions as a team effort (good for demonstration meetings)

The role is the same - however the approach is very different for each objective. The key learning is how to lead in each situation.
