With a population of 29,000, Timaru has the hustle and bustle of a city, but is easy to get around like a small town. Located on the East Coast of the South Island, it offers rolling hills, views of the Southern Alps and the Beautiful Caroline Bay.
The South Canterbury Museum is located in the heart of Timaru and is a great way to learn about the natural, cultural, and social history of the region. Exhibits include fossils, local wildlife, historic photographs, and a replica of the historic aeroplane built by local inventor, Richard Pearse. Entry to this museum is free!
The Timaru Botanic Gardens are a peaceful and beautifully maintained space right in the heart of the city. It’s the perfect spot for a quiet walk or a relaxed catch-up with friends. You’ll find winding paths, a charming rose garden, and even a few friendly ducks around the ponds!
Caroline Bay is a favorite amongst locals and visitors! It offers a beautiful stretch of beach, surrounding gardens, a large aviary for viewing birds and other recreational activities. It is the perfect escape if you need to get a breath of fresh air in between conference sessions!
Experience the buzz of Timaru’s main street. With a wide variety of shops, food outlets and historic buildings, there is plenty to keep you entertained!
