The Bryan Buchanan Trophy is awarded to the winner of the District International Speech Contest. The cup was first awarded in 1995 following the decision to retire the Jolyon Firth Cup. Bryan had a long association with the Prepared Speech Contest, having won it in 1974 and 1994. At the time Bryan won in 1974, the next level was entering the International Taped Speech Contest. Bryan entered and won.
In 2001, the top of the Bryan Buchanan Trophy was damaged. The Jolyon Firth Cup was added to the Bryan Buchanan base thus retaining the names of all the winners.

The Rob Henry Trophy is awarded to the winner of District 72 Evaluation Contest. It was first awarded in 1972. Rob Hendry was a charter member of the first Club in New Zealand, the Dunedin Club. He was one of our early leaders during the Territorial Council years and was Council President 1970-71. In 1969 Rob received the District’s first Able Toastmaster award (ATM).

The Nottage Rutledge Grieve Trophy is awarded to the winner of the District Humorous Speech Contest. It was first awarded in 1999. The name of the trophy is in recognition of the contribution and achievements of three members, David Nottage, Brett Rutledge and Robin Grieve. All three won the District International Speech Contest (in 1996, 1998, 1997), the Overseas Inter-Districts Semi-final and subsequently were in the respective finals of the World Championship of Public Speaking, with David and Brett becoming the World Champion of Public Speaking in 1996 and 1998 respectively. All three have also won other District 72 contests during the same period.

Jack Duffy was a founder of the Rotorua Toastmasters Club, chartered in June 1965, and remained a member until his death. During his 20 years with Toastmasters, Jack held every position in his club and also served as Area Governor. His attendance was second to none, and his most outstanding attribute was his willingness to tackle any task, particularly when it came to assisting a new members and organising community events.
After Jack Duffy’s death, the then Area Governor, Jack Hawthorn, arranged for the Jack Duffy Rose Bowl Community Involvement Award to be presented annually, in recognition of his services to Toastmasters and that he was then one of the longest serving members in District 72.

The Don Harden award recognises an outstanding contribution to the Professionalism of Toastmasters. The recipient of the award is a District Officer or Field Officer awarded by the District Director at the end of their term. Don was a tireless member of the Rangitoto Toastmasters Club and did a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes for Toastmasters. Don died in a car accident in 1986 on his way to a Toastmasters function in Palmerston North. The award was first presented in 1987 by District Governor Mary Walker (1986-87).

This trophy is awarded to the Area Governor of the year and was first awarded in 1992 for the 1991-1992 term. Len joined Pukekura Club in 1975 and Auckland Club in 1983. As VP Education and then as President, he saw the Auckland Club become Top Club in 1985 and 1986. Len Jury was District Governor in 1989-90, International Director in 1990-92 and International President in 1997-98, the second President from outside North America.

The trophy is awarded to the Division Governor of the year. Terry Bellamy joined the Wellington Club in 1971. He was President of his club in 1974-75, Area Governor 1975-79 and involved in the chartering of the Paraparaumu and Johnsonville clubs. During Terry’s year as District Governor (1981-82), District 72 achieved Distinguished District status, with strong growth in new clubs and members. He personally received the Distinguished District plaque during the Toastmasters International Convention in Phoenix and also led an educational session on Team Building.

The Anzac Trophy is presented annually to the Immediate Past District Director to acknowledge their service as District Director. It was first awarded in 1990 and the names of District Directors since 1990 are recorded on this trophy. The trophy was presented by District 69 Governor Desley Cooper DTM on behalf of the Executive and members, on the occasion of the 1990 Down Under Convention, in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Anzacs on Gallipoli, and the 150th anniversary of the Treaty of Waitangi. The trophy also has the inscription “The District 69 Memorial trophy 1990” which in effect recognised the last Down Under Convention held.
